Tie Dyeing
Tie-dyeing is a fun art and craft! Basic tie-dying is simple enough to be done by elementary children (especially 8 years old and up) and it is interesting and challenging enough for adults. The bright colors, funky patterns and overall creative process is exciting for any age. Advanced tie-dying requires a degree of specialized knowledge and technique. Advanced tie-dying means producing tight patterns, with beautiful color harmony, strong color intensity and can include making particular forms, such as hearts, peace signs, guitars, drums and more. As with any craft, the greater ones knowledge and technique, the more successfully one can create. While in college I developed a small business making and selling tie-dye clothing and tapestries. While working with a friend we discovered a way to combine drawing (and painting) with tie-dyeing. We called it Live-Dyes. Tie-dying and live-dyeing were perfect stepping stones for me to develop skills and confidence for painting - I even paint with the powder-based dyes, which I used for tie-dyeing. A great website and company for tie dye materials and learning how to tie-dye is Dharma Trading Company.com.
Paintings - made with the same paints used in the above tie-dyes |
