"There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks.  Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story." ~Linda Hogan

Self Similarity: Definition

What is Self-Similarity?

Two categories of Self-Similarity: Self-Similar Scales & Self-Similar Forms

Self Similar Scales

Self-similarity is the phenomenon by which the same form repeats itself on different scales, sizes & levels in nature & creation.  For example, the branching of a tree; and of rivers; and of veins and arteries are all self similar.  In fact, each human being is self similar to his or her parents and them to their parents.  Likewise, each animal, each insect, each plant - they are all proof of self similarity.  In the most obvious, every day ways, life is self similar.

Self Similar Forms

Self-similarity is the phenomenon by which the same form repeats itself across different objects or aspects of nature & creation.  Thus, there is a self-similar form between cauliflower and the human brain; & between rocks and mountains; and oceans, lakes, ponds, pools and bath tubes.

What self-similar forms can you find in your daily observations?
